## Worth keeping in mind

- Check the actual plan, then choose whether to wait or leave. You need not establish their motive.
- Respect closed contact channels; an explanation is not required before moving on.
- A return message gives you a choice, not an obligation to arrange another date.

> You can leave the empty chair without solving the mystery.

You have found the bookshop café, ordered a tea and checked the meeting point twice. Their seat stays empty. Then the message thread disappears. Cloaking in dating names the experience of being stood up and blocked through the channels where you had been communicating. If this has happened to you, the immediate task is getting yourself somewhere you want to be. An explanation can wait. It may never come.

## Name what happened without inventing their reasons

Ghosting describes unexplained contact ending. Cloaking adds a missed arranged meeting and closed communication channels. These are informal dating terms, not psychological diagnoses.

A no-show alone does not establish blocking: the plan may have been misunderstood, an account may have closed, or something unexpected may have happened. You can check the agreed time and location without turning the evening into an investigation.

You might feel embarrassed, angry or mostly annoyed about the journey. None requires a verdict about their personality. You know you were left waiting; you do not know their private explanation.

## Decide what you need at the café

If an ordinary contact channel is still open and you want to use it, one message can be enough: “I’m at the café we agreed. Are you still coming?” Choose how long you are willing to wait based on your travel, comfort and plans. No universal waiting time is required.

You can leave, stay for your tea or ask someone you trust to meet you. If you shared the plan with a friend, update them. Avoid moving to an unfamiliar private place because somebody suddenly offers a different meeting point.

RAINN recommends public meeting places, independent transport and sharing plans with a trusted person as dating safety options. No precaution guarantees safety, and another person’s harmful conduct is never your fault. If you feel unsafe now, ask venue staff or a trusted person for help and use local emergency services in immediate danger.

## Keep the next step within your own reach

If you have been blocked, do not create another account, recruit friends to contact them or look for their workplace. Wanting an explanation is understandable; it does not make another channel yours to open.

You can put the phone away and choose a small ordinary plan for the evening: food, your journey home, a call with someone kind. You do not have to pretend you enjoyed being stood up.

If contact remains open, a final message is optional: “I’m heading home. I won’t arrange another date.” You need neither an accusation nor a reply to make that decision. Credible concerns about someone’s immediate safety belong with appropriate local services, rather than repeated attempts to reach a blocked account.

## Consider a return message on its actual terms

If they reappear, listen only if you want to. An explanation and apology may matter to you. Neither obliges you to reschedule.

You might say: “I appreciate the explanation. I’m not arranging another meeting.” Or, if you freely want to try again: “I need a clear place and time, and a message if the plan changes.” Judge whether that arrangement suits you, without setting traps to test them.

For your own future plans, cancel clearly when it is safe: “I’ve changed my mind about meeting. I won’t be coming.” Blocking may be necessary when there is unwanted contact or a safety concern. Nobody owes continued access or an in-person goodbye.

## Make future dating manageable, rather than impossible to fail

Choose a first meeting with a cost, journey and length you can comfortably manage. A mutually welcome confirmation beforehand can clarify plans, but cannot guarantee someone will attend.

If threats, harassment or fear of retaliation are involved, seek confidential specialist support instead of confronting the person. The Hotline offers US support; use suitable local help elsewhere and a safer device if monitoring concerns you.

The empty chair tells you what happened tonight. It need not decide whether you ever sit down with someone new.

Quick answers

## Frequently asked questions

Is cloaking different from ghosting?

Both involve contact ending without explanation. In dating slang, cloaking also involves a missed arranged meeting and blocking or unmatching. Neither term diagnoses someone’s personality.

Should I contact someone who stood me up?

One brief message through an existing open channel is optional. If you have been blocked, do not bypass it. You can leave and decide against another date without a reply.

How long should I wait for a date who has not arrived?

Check the agreed time and place, then choose a limit that fits your comfort and travel. You can leave whenever you want. Safety takes priority over politeness.
