## Worth keeping in mind

- Choose the kind of conversation and inspect sample wording before buying a pack.
- Compare phone versus paper, practical access, privacy and the full current cost.
- One freely chosen card can be enough; hear the answer before moving to another question.

> You bring a new pack to the table, shuffle it and read the first card. Your partner looks at their cooling tea: “That feels a bit much tonight.” The box promised a meaningful evening. What you needed first was a conversation you both wanted to have.

Conversation cards for couples supply questions when you do not know where to begin. Choose by format, sample wording and room to pass, rather than how many cards fill the box. Here are two named options and a no-purchase alternative, with a practical way to use one.

## Choose the conversation before the deck

Ask: “Would you like something playful, a memory, or a question about our plans?” Those are different evenings. A reflective pack can feel misplaced when someone hoped to laugh after a long day.

Look at sample cards together. Would you want to hear the answer, and would your partner welcome the question? A provocative title does not make a topic suitable. Agree that either person can skip a card, change the subject or stop without explaining why.

The comparisons below use official descriptions checked on 11 October 2026\. They are not hands-on reviews or a ranking. Product details can change; inspect the current listing before downloading or buying.

## Gottman Card Decks: a free digital starting point

The Gottman Institute describes its free Card Decks app as fourteen decks with more than 1,000 flashcards containing questions, statements and ideas. You can mark a card as a favourite and move between all cards and favourites.

This format may suit you if you want to browse together on a phone and return to a saved card. If having a phone at the table distracts either person, consider paper instead. Check device availability, accessibility and the privacy policy for your needs; a free download is not a privacy guarantee.

The Card Decks app is distinct from the Institute’s other assessment and adviser products. Its card count does not tell you whether a particular conversation will be welcome.

## We’re Not Really Strangers: a physical couples pack

The official Couples Edition listing describes a physical pack for two players, with 150 questions and wildcards across three levels. The publisher says you can use a few cards or continue through the levels, depending on how long you want to play.

Paper may suit an evening where you want to put phones aside. Read available examples and how-to-play information before choosing: a pack aimed at personal conversation may not fit a lighthearted mood. Levels are a format, not a requirement to disclose more.

Check the current total in your currency, delivery, returns and any applicable taxes. We have not tested the pack, and customer praise is not evidence that it repairs a relationship.

## Use these checks before spending anything

Choose the option that fits the evening you actually want. If you disagree about depth, begin with a subject you both welcome; buying a more personal pack will not resolve that difference.

For an app, check whether answers are entered or stored before using it. Do not assume that a feature absent from a product description is absent from the app. For paper, decide what happens to written answers or notes. Either person can keep an answer private.

- Sample wording: does it invite a story, or assume a problem you do not have?
- Topics and pace: can you choose a subject and stop after a single welcome question?
- Access: can you both comfortably read the text, use the language and handle the format?
- Passing: agree your own no-penalty pass rule, even if a pack’s rules do not mention one.
- Cost: check the full local price and delivery for paper, or current download terms for digital.

## Try three homemade cards and follow one answer

Before buying, write these original prompts on three slips of paper. They are an editorial alternative, not questions copied from either product. Choose one together; there is no score or required turn count.

The Gottman Institute recommends open-ended questions that leave the respondent room to choose the direction. Follow a detail from the answer rather than immediately drawing another card.

Ask, “Which ordinary moment together would you happily revisit?” Your partner might say: “When the train was cancelled and we shared that enormous pastry while we waited.” You remember being annoyed about the delay. Ask: “What made that moment good for you?” They answer, “We finally sat down without rushing.”

Try: “I remember the delay differently, but I had not realised you liked that pause.” You need not revise your own memory. Ask whether they would enjoy a bakery stop this weekend, or simply leave the story heard. An answer is not an automatic request for action.

- Which ordinary moment together would you happily revisit?
- What small curiosity would you like us to explore?
- What would make a free afternoon feel well spent to you?

## Put the pack away when a different conversation is needed

If an answer raises a disagreement, ask whether you both want to discuss it now or return later. Keep practical decisions explicit. A question game cannot assess compatibility, settle a serious conflict or replace qualified professional care for persistent distress.

Where abuse, coercion or fear of retaliation exists, seek confidential specialist help rather than deeper joint disclosure. The Hotline explains that material shared in couples counselling can be used against an abused partner. Contact The Hotline in the US or a local domestic-abuse service elsewhere; use emergency services for immediate danger.

Back at the table, put the unwelcome card aside. You can choose a lighter question, share a memory or finish your tea. The useful deck is one you can both choose to use.

Quick answers

## Frequently asked questions

Are there free conversation cards for couples?

The Gottman Institute describes its Card Decks app as free. Check current device availability and terms. You can also write our three original prompts on paper. Neither option requires completing a deck or answering a question you do not want.

Are physical cards better than a conversation app?

That depends on the format you both want. Paper can let you put phones aside; digital cards can offer browsing and saved favourites where supported. Consider readable text, language, privacy and cost. We have not conducted a comparative product test.

What if a card is too personal?

Pass, choose a different subject or stop. You do not owe an explanation or equally personal disclosure. Agree this before beginning. If a subject needs a serious discussion, arrange that separately rather than relying on a game to resolve it.
