## Worth keeping in mind

- Aim humour at an ordinary situation, with both people free to decline the joke.
- Give one resolution a practical action, fair ownership and a smaller or cancelled version.
- Review actual effort and enjoyment; a missed agreement still deserves accountability.

> You have resolved to be a more spontaneous couple. So far, this has involved a calendar invitation called “Spontaneity.” The intention is lovely. The invitation needs a little work.

Funny relationship resolutions can give an ordinary intention a lighter opening. The useful part is what happens after the laugh: a choice you both understand and want to make. Aim the joke at a familiar situation, rather than someone’s body, ability, history or feelings. These eight original ideas come with a practical version. Pick one that fits; you do not need an annual programme of becoming better partners.

## Let the joke introduce the agreement

If the problem already hurts, discuss it plainly before adding humour. A repeated missed responsibility does not become harmless because its new title is funny. Either person can ask to leave the joke out.

Stan Tatkin’s PACT guidance describes caring for yourself and your partner at the same time. Here, that means considering the enjoyment and effort for both people. The resolutions are original editorial suggestions, not PACT treatment or a promise of improvement.

Use three questions when choosing: Do we both want this? Who does the work? What happens when the plan does not fit? Keep an honest no available, including to the resolution itself.

## 1\. Retire “anything is fine” from restaurant negotiations

The playful version: “We will stop ordering the meal called Anything.” The practical version: each name an acceptable option and a real limit, such as budget or dietary needs. Choose from the overlap.

If neither option works, use a simple meal you already agreed is suitable. Nobody needs to guess the preference behind a reluctant “fine.” Keep food allergies and other requirements serious; this is a decision shortcut, not a game with ingredients.

## 2\. Give the escape artist sock a proper address

The playful version: “We will stop giving single socks independent careers.” Choose a small place for unmatched laundry and a person who will check it when doing the relevant load.

Define the whole job, including sorting and putting things away. If laundry is already unevenly shared, address that division directly. A witty label should not leave one person managing another reminder system.

## 3\. Offer the tired version of the date

The playful version: “Our evening plans will come with a sofa edition.” Agree a smaller option you both enjoy, such as tea and one track each, alongside the original outing.

Decide how to change or cancel the plan, including any booking costs. If neither person wants the sofa edition, resting separately is allowed. An alternative is useful only when it offers a real choice.

## 4\. Stop appointing a spokesperson for both preferences

The playful version: “The phrase ‘we love this’ will require two votes.” Before accepting an invitation on both people’s behalf, check availability and interest.

You can enjoy different things. One partner might attend while the other stays home. For commitments that affect childcare or other shared responsibilities, discuss the practical arrangement rather than announcing a personal choice and leaving the work behind.

## 5\. Have a very small premiere for a new hobby

The playful version: “We will audition hobbies before ordering their furniture.” Try an activity with materials you already have or a cost you both accept. Agree the preparation and clean-up.

Afterwards, each name something you enjoyed and whether you want another attempt. “Once was enough” is a legitimate review. A hobby can stay individual if the shared version feels forced.

## 6\. Ask which hat the listener should wear

The playful version: “Advice will stop arriving in unlabelled parcels.” When someone shares a difficult day, ask whether they want listening, ideas or company while doing something else.

The answer can change. Say what you can offer: “I can listen after dinner; I cannot give it proper attention while cooking.” A question about support works when the response is heard, rather than treated as a test with one approved answer.

## 7\. Give tiny discoveries a place at the table

The playful version: “The interesting leaf may have its moment.” If you both enjoy it, each bring one small thing you noticed to a meal or message: an odd sign, a new word or something that made you smile.

Keep it optional and brief. No collection target, equal contribution or requirement to be amusing. The point is to hear what caught the other person’s attention; it need not become a performance.

## 8\. Put the grand promise on a smaller chair

The playful version: “This year’s enormous declaration will fit on one note.” Replace “We will spend more quality time together” with a specific invitation, such as choosing a short walk for the coming week.

Write what you both chose, who handles any preparation and when you will decide whether to repeat it. Do not turn the note into a contract for affection. If the plan keeps missing a real need, discuss that need rather than adding another resolution.

## Review the experience without making it a score

After trying one idea, ask whether it was welcome and useful. Did the meal get chosen? Was the whole laundry job handled? Did the smaller date actually leave both people with more choice?

Keep, change or retire the resolution together. Notice unequal effort, and own any freely agreed task you missed. The person affected does not have to make your lapse funny or applaud the apology.

If teasing itself hurts someone, stop it. Name the remark you need to end: “Please don’t joke about my work.” If you made it, own the action and say what you will change. A request to stop does not need a matching sense of humour. Persistent distress may need qualified support; coercion or fear calls for confidential specialist guidance.

The calendar invitation can stay if you both like it. Give it a plan you actually want to turn up for, including permission to choose another evening.

Quick answers

## Frequently asked questions

What are good funny relationship resolutions?

Try a light title for an ordinary shared choice: choosing meals clearly, sampling a hobby or planning a smaller date. Add an action both people want and make the joke about the situation rather than a partner’s weakness.

What if only one of us finds the resolution funny?

Drop the joke. Discuss the actual intention in plain language or choose another idea. Nobody has to laugh along, accept teasing or perform enthusiasm for an unwanted plan.

How do we avoid giving ourselves more work?

Choose one small idea, name the complete preparation and agree who handles it. Review whether it fits after trying it. Simplify or stop it if it becomes another responsibility neither person wants.
