## Worth keeping in mind

- Choose suitable ingredients and one manageable recipe together.
- Use the quantities as snack portions for two and share complete kitchen jobs.
- Keep ingredients visible, check labels and follow the cited hygiene and storage guidance.

> The evening can be playful without becoming a cooking competition.

One of you has saved a spectacular haunted-house cake. The other has found two bowls and would quite like to sit down before midnight. These Halloween-themed recipes for couples are four small assembly ideas: three snacks and a drink, each serving two. Pick one or two rather than making the entire list. A crooked monster can still taste perfectly ordinary.

## Choose what you can both eat before choosing the face

Agree ingredients, spending and who will prepare each part. These are snack portions. You need two bowls or glasses, a chopping board, a knife and a spoon.

Check all ingredient and precautionary allergen labels, including dips, biscuits and decorations. The Food Standards Agency advises asking the person about their needs, retaining packaging and preventing allergen cross-contamination with clean equipment and surfaces. If you cannot confidently accommodate an allergy, agree a suitable alternative with that person.

Keep this a visible-ingredient activity. Skip hidden ingredients.

## 1\. Pepper monsters with cucumber eyes

For two: one large sweet pepper, four tablespoons of ready-to-eat hummus and four small cucumber slices. Use ingredients both people can eat; check the specific pack’s allergen information.

Wash the pepper and cucumber under running water. Cut the pepper lengthways into two halves, removing the stalk, seeds and white ribs. Spoon two tablespoons of hummus into each half. Add two cucumber eyes to each, pressing them lightly into the dip.

Name each monster. Divide cutting and plating. Eat with cutlery or cut into manageable pieces; skip toothpicks. Choose a different suitable ready-to-eat dip if hummus does not fit your needs.

## 2\. Buried-treasure yoghurt cups

For two: 250 g of plain yoghurt, one small apple and two digestive biscuits. Check the yoghurt and biscuit labels for relevant allergens, including any substitute products.

Wash and core the apple, then dice it into small pieces. Divide half the yoghurt between two bowls, add the apple, then spoon the remaining yoghurt over it. Crumble one biscuit over each bowl as the top layer.

Invent a museum label for the apple: “Fragment of the Count’s missing lunch”. Add the biscuit just before eating if you prefer it crisp. Keep yoghurt chilled until assembly.

## 3\. Ghost-garden rice cakes

For two: four plain rice cakes, two tablespoons of ready-to-eat cream cheese and four thin cucumber slices. Check every product label. Choose a suitable spread by agreement if cream cheese is unwelcome.

Spread half a tablespoon on each rice cake. Cut each cucumber slice into two small eye shapes and arrange them on the spread. The white circle becomes a very round ghost. Serve straight away to keep the rice cakes crisp.

Divide spreading and decorating. There is no need to improve your partner’s ghost unless they ask. A lopsided expression gives the garden some character.

## 4\. The haunted orchard fizz

For two: 100 ml of apple juice, 200 ml of sparkling water and two drinking glasses. Check the products suit you both. For a still version, use drinking water instead.

Pour 50 ml of juice into each glass, then add 100 ml of water and stir gently. Serve immediately. Give the drink a fictional orchard name on a separate paper card, away from the liquid. Keep decorations out of food and drink.

This is an alcohol-free suggestion. Skip powders and smoke effects. If the flavour is too sweet or sharp for you, adjust the juice-to-water balance to taste.

## Keep the food details ordinary and clear

FDA guidance recommends washing hands and food-preparation surfaces and rinsing produce under running water. Keep refrigerated ingredients cold until needed and follow storage instructions on each pack.

Its buffet guidance says to discard perishable food left at room temperature for more than two hours unless properly held hot or cold; above 32°C (90°F), that becomes one hour. Use a timer to track food left out.

## Leave enough evening to enjoy what you made

Try: “I will cut the pepper and wash the board. Could you make the drinks and clear the bowls afterwards?” Owning a whole job is clearer than one person supervising while the other waits for instructions.

Taste, adapt and ask before photographing. The haunted-house cake can wait. Tonight, two bowls are enough.
