## Worth keeping in mind

- Agree guest numbers, spending, work and the finish before inviting people.
- Make food, access, costumes and games clear and participation optional.
- Share complete hosting jobs, including food storage and cleanup afterwards.

> Hosting together starts before the invitations go out.

You mention having a few friends over. Your partner hears drinks and a playlist; you hear decorating, food, bathroom cleaning and tomorrow’s washing-up. Before the group chat receives a pumpkin emoji, agree what you are actually offering. Here is how to host a Halloween party for couples with a workable plan for both hosts and room for every guest to enjoy it differently.

## Agree the size of the evening before inviting anyone

Choose a guest limit, total spend, start and finish time, and whether this is snacks or a meal. Include shopping, equipment and cleanup. Ask what each person can handle.

Stan Tatkin describes PACT’s simultaneous care as considering yourself and your partner together. For party planning, your wish to see friends belongs beside their wish for a manageable evening.

Try: “I want to invite four friends. I can organise snacks and clear the kitchen. Would you want to handle invitations and the living room, or should we make a smaller plan?” A no needs no counter-offer.

## Send an invitation that answers the awkward questions

Name each invited person. Include date, address, travel, finish, food and whether children or other guests are included. Explain costumes and atmosphere.

For example: “Small Halloween evening at ours, seven until ten, snacks rather than dinner. Costumes welcome, ordinary clothes equally welcome. Gentle games, no surprise scares. Tell us privately about food or access needs before we shop.”

Single friends can be welcome too. Check before adding extra guests. Nobody should discover a surprise setup or an expensive costume requirement at the door.

## Give each host complete jobs

List complete jobs and their owners: invitations sent, food bought and stored, room ready, playlist chosen, bathroom usable, leftovers handled. Divide by capacity and preference rather than assuming one person will remember everything.

Food jobs include labels and clearing preparation space; room jobs include returning chairs. Remove activities or buy suitable prepared food if needed.

## Make the room welcoming before making it spooky

Keep entrances, walking routes and exits clear and lit. Explain coats, the loo and seating. Offer a quieter place and ask about access needs.

Place paper decorations without obstruction. US Fire Administration guidance suggests battery-operated flameless candles. Use those near costumes and decorations. Keep music at a level that allows conversation; skip unexpected frights.

## Serve a manageable menu with visible ingredients

Choose a few foods you can prepare or buy reliably. Ask guests about dietary needs before buying. The Food Standards Agency advises keeping ingredient information, cleaning equipment and preventing allergen cross-contamination. A themed name should not hide what a dish contains.

Put cold food out in small portions and keep replacements refrigerated. FDA recommends replacing serving dishes rather than topping up old food. Its rule is to discard perishables left at room temperature beyond two hours unless properly held hot or cold; above 32°C (90°F), use one hour. Follow pack storage instructions.

Offer clearly identified alcohol-free drinks without requiring an explanation. Agree contributions beforehand. Keep decorations out of food; write “Midnight Dip” on a separate card.

## Choose two optional games with no couple ranking

For a drawing game, offer paper and pens. Each willing guest draws an imaginary ghost’s day job; others suggest a name. People can draw, guess or watch, and nobody has to explain a private relationship story.

For a tabletop mystery, write three clues leading to a fictional missing object in the room. Use readable clues, accessible places and hints. Keep the object away from guests’ bags and private belongings.

Explain once; stop when interest fades. Avoid compatibility quizzes, mandatory kisses, personal confessions or embarrassing-photo rewards. Ask each person before taking, saving or posting their photograph.

## Protect the finish and tomorrow morning

Before guests arrive, agree who handles food storage, rubbish and the final room check. Let guests know when you are winding down; offer travel information without assuming either host can give lifts.

Afterwards, ask what you would change. A host who spent the whole party in the kitchen has useful information, even if everyone praised the food. Cut one job next time. The pumpkin emoji can stand for an evening you both agreed to host.

Quick answers

## Frequently asked questions

Do we need matching costumes at a couples Halloween party?

No. Welcome ordinary clothes. A theme need not require costume purchases or dressing up for a partner.

What can we do instead of drinking or couple quizzes?

Offer the ghost drawing game or tabletop mystery. Guests can watch or skip. Keep personal disclosures, kissing and embarrassing photographs out of game penalties.

What if one host feels overwhelmed?

Pause new invitations and name the jobs still outstanding. Reduce guest numbers or activities, buy suitable prepared food, or choose another plan together. Agree complete jobs before treating the gathering as decided.
