## Worth keeping in mind

- Choose questions both partners are happy to answer.
- Agree simple scoring and allow passing without penalty.
- Use surprising answers to learn, not to judge the relationship.

> You confidently predict your partner’s favourite takeaway. They write something completely different. Apparently, the noodles have been dethroned.

Newlywed game questions turn everyday knowledge into a playful guessing game. You do not need to be newly married, and matching answers does not measure how much you love each other. This version has forty original prompts for private play or a celebration. Choose the ones that suit your audience, decide what stays off-limits and leave room for the answer that has changed since you last asked.

## How to play with two people

You need paper or a private note each. Choose ten questions for a short round. For each question, both people write their own answer and predict their partner’s answer before either reveals anything. Take turns reading the answers aloud.

If you want scores, give one point for each correct prediction, with up to two points available per question across the couple. Accept an answer with the same meaning; do not spend the date litigating whether “crisps” includes a particular flavour. A pass has no penalty. You can also skip scores entirely.

## For a party, agree the questions before the microphone

A host should let both partners review the question list privately and remove anything they dislike. Each person can write their own answers before the event; during the game, the other predicts them. Use the same number of questions for each partner.

Tell the room: “We are here for stories, not embarrassing revelations. Either person can pass, and we are not arguing with their answer.” Avoid questions about sex, fertility, debt, former partners or family conflict unless everyone involved has freely chosen that discussion. Ask before recording or posting clips.

## Round one: ordinary preferences

Use these as a gentle opening. The answers should be what is true now, rather than what someone liked when you first met.

- 1\. What would your partner order for a relaxed takeaway tonight?
- 2\. Which everyday drink would they most happily be handed?
- 3\. What household object would they notice missing first?
- 4\. Which seat do they choose when there is no assigned seating?
- 5\. What snack would they pack for a journey?
- 6\. Which kind of weather makes them want to go outside?
- 7\. What would they buy first in a second-hand bookshop?
- 8\. Which meal could they eat again without complaining?
- 9\. What small comfort would they add to a hotel room?
- 10\. Which sound would they happily remove from their morning?

## Round two: the stories you share

Different memories are allowed. If one person remembers the setting and the other remembers the joke, you have acquired another version of the same evening.

- 11\. What detail would your partner mention first about your first meeting?
- 12\. Which shared outing would they like to repeat?
- 13\. What song would they connect with an early memory of you?
- 14\. Which meal you made together would they remember most clearly?
- 15\. What small mishap would they put in a story about your travels?
- 16\. Which photograph of you both would they choose for a frame?
- 17\. What ordinary place would they include on a map of your relationship?
- 18\. Which shared purchase has earned its place in your home?
- 19\. What phrase between you would need explaining to a visitor?
- 20\. Which moment would they say deserved a photograph but never got one?

## Round three: playful predictions

Keep the guesses affectionate. Turn a difference into curiosity rather than a vote on which partner is more sensible.

- 21\. What subject would your partner teach a very enthusiastic short class about?
- 22\. Which household task would they redesign if they could invent a machine?
- 23\. What name would they give a tiny café you opened together?
- 24\. Which film character would they invite to a harmless dinner party?
- 25\. What would they choose to learn if equipment and lessons were free?
- 26\. Which ordinary object would they rescue from a closing museum of your home?
- 27\. What theme would they choose for a deliberately ridiculous celebration?
- 28\. Which errand would they turn into an outing if there were time?
- 29\. What item would appear on their imaginary personal coat of arms?
- 30\. Which two foods would they put on a very short restaurant menu?

## Round four: knowing the person today

These work best when the couple is comfortable with a slightly more personal round. Keep any follow-up discussion voluntary, especially in front of guests.

- 31\. What recent achievement would your partner quietly like recognised?
- 32\. Which small favour would make their next busy day easier?
- 33\. What do they currently wish they had more time to enjoy?
- 34\. Which plan would they gladly simplify this month?
- 35\. What kind of message would brighten a difficult afternoon?
- 36\. Which part of a shared weekend would they most want protected?
- 37\. What practical skill are they proud of having learned?
- 38\. Which new interest would they like you to ask about?
- 39\. What would they choose for a modest celebration of good news?
- 40\. Which ordinary moment with you would they like more of?

## End with a story, not a relationship verdict

Ask each person to share one answer they enjoyed learning. If a miss touches a real hurt, pause the game and save the conversation for privacy. An audience does not need to decide who should have known better.

The useful souvenir might be that your partner now wants a quiet breakfast instead of a surprise party. Remembering that tomorrow matters more than winning tonight.

Quick answers

## Frequently asked questions

How do you score the newlywed game?

In this version, award one point for each correct prediction of a partner’s answer. Agree how to handle close matches before starting, or play without scores.

Can couples play if they are not newly married?

Yes. Adapt the questions to your shared history and comfort. The game works for established couples without requiring a wedding or anniversary.

Which questions should a wedding host avoid?

Avoid private, humiliating or contentious subjects the couple has not explicitly approved. Let both people remove questions beforehand and pass during the game.
