## Worth keeping in mind

- Check two-player access, devices, accounts and the total cost before the date.
- Choose live or delayed play deliberately; turn-taking does not guarantee a long response window.
- Keep competition voluntary and have a simple backup when play stops being enjoyable.

> You finally have an evening free together. One of you has downloaded the game. The other discovers it needs a different device, another purchase and possibly a third person. The date has become a small technical-support department.

Useful online games for couples fit two people’s devices, budget and appetite for competition. This shortlist compares five specific games you can play across distance, with the setup and cost model made explicit. Start with the kind of evening you want, then choose the game. A timer and a leaderboard are optional ingredients in romance.

## Choose the evening before choosing the game

For free phone play across iPhone and Android, look at Sea Battle on Plato. For browser-based card games, compare Jaipur and Lost Cities on Board Game Arena. For chess, consider Lichess. For a shared puzzle under time pressure, consider Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes.

These are editorial selections based on official product information checked on 3 October 2026, not a hands-on ranking or evidence of relationship benefits. Prices and access can change, so confirm both people’s local store and device requirements before paying.

Decide whether you want to compete, cooperate or simply have something to do while talking. Also agree whether you will play live or at separate times. A game that takes turns is not necessarily one you can leave overnight: check the selected mode’s timer.

## 1\. Sea Battle on Plato: a straightforward phone match

Sea Battle is a two-player guessing-and-strategy game: place your fleet, then try to find your partner’s ships. Plato supports play across iOS and Android, so different phone brands need not rule it out. Both people need the app for this game; do not confuse it with Plato’s browser version of Ocho.

The official Sea Battle page describes free play, private-game invitations and optional purchases for appearance. Start a private game with your partner rather than entering a public match. Check the current mode and clock before assuming you can reply hours later. A separate voice call is optional.

Choose this when you want a familiar grid-based contest without a long shared campaign. Agree whether playful commentary is welcome. “Nice move” and “I cannot believe you missed that” can create very different evenings, even when the screen looks identical.

## 2\. Jaipur on Board Game Arena: a card game built for two

Jaipur centres on collecting, exchanging and selling goods. Its Board Game Arena page lists two players, with both real-time and turn-based recommendations. It is worth considering if you enjoy deciding when to keep collecting and when to cash in, without needing a whole group.

On the review date, Jaipur carried a Premium badge. You both need Board Game Arena accounts, but only the person creating a Premium table needs a paid membership; their partner can join with a free account. The platform works in modern desktop and mobile browsers without a game download.

The Premium page displayed €5 billed monthly or €42 billed upfront for a year in the euro view we checked. These are dated regional examples, not a quote for every reader. Check renewal terms and the total charge before choosing. Try the rules or tutorial first rather than subscribing on the strength of the theme alone.

## 3\. Lost Cities on Board Game Arena: a second two-player card option

Lost Cities asks you to build card sequences for expeditions while judging which ones are worth starting. The official page lists two players. Choose it if the idea of committing to a plan with incomplete information sounds enjoyable to both of you. The expedition theme does not require travel knowledge.

Lost Cities also carried a Premium badge when checked, so the same one-paid-host arrangement applies. Use separate accounts and a suitable browser. Select a mutually workable timer; the page recommends real-time play, and a short advertised duration is not a promise about your first learning game.

If one partner already knows the rules, agree whether the first game is a learning round. Explain choices only when invited. You can enjoy someone’s company without turning each move into a lesson or deliberately pretending not to understand the game.

## 4\. Chess on Lichess: free browser play with room to learn

Lichess provides free chess supported by donations. Its home page offers “Challenge a friend”, so you can arrange a game with each other rather than join an open lobby. Use the browser option and inspect the chosen time control before starting.

This is a good candidate when both people want chess, including a slow learning session. If skill levels differ, ask whether coaching is wanted before offering it. You might discuss a position together after the game; avoid unsolicited corrections while your partner is still thinking.

Keep game invitations and any profile or chat details within the audience you intend. A shared game is not a reason to exchange passwords. If one person does not enjoy chess, choose another activity rather than treating persistence as proof of interest in the relationship.

## 5\. Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes: cooperate through a voice call

One person sees a fictional bomb puzzle; the other reads the manual and helps interpret what to do. The developer recommends groups of two to four and explains remote play through a voice connection. The manual reader does not need to buy or install the game.

The person acting as Defuser needs a purchased copy on a supported device. If both of you want that role remotely, each needs a copy. The developer lists iOS and Android among its platforms; the US Apple listing showed $9.99 when checked. Other platforms and regions have their own prices and requirements.

Have the manual open or printed before the call. Keep the Defuser’s screen hidden from the reader: describing the puzzle is part of play. Choose this only if both people like the fictional bomb theme and time pressure. It is entertainment, not a test of how well you communicate as a couple.

## Make the first session easy to stop or change

Before the date, confirm that each person can open the game, read its text and accept the invitation. Check audio, controls and accessibility settings that matter to you. Agree a finish time and whether purchases beyond the initial access cost are off the table.

For poor connectivity, use this no-download fallback: one person describes an invented room, including three objects and one odd detail. The other sketches or describes the room back, then you swap. Text messages work if a call does not. This is an original conversation game, not a substitute for a platform’s offline mode.

If either person becomes frustrated, pause between rounds. Try: “I still want time with you. This game is not working for me tonight. Could we switch?” You can discuss hurtful behaviour directly without requiring another match to settle it.

## Notice the person beside the score

The Gottman Institute describes bids as attempts to connect and turning towards as noticing and responding. During a game, your partner’s delighted “Look what I managed!” may be an invitation to share the moment. An interested response can be as ordinary as, “Show me how you did it.”

Ask afterwards what you would keep: the game, the slower pace, the voice call or simply having an activity together. No result needs to become a verdict on compatibility. Next time, the technical-support department can close early.

Quick answers

## Frequently asked questions

What online games can long-distance couples play on different phones?

Sea Battle on Plato supports iOS and Android play. Both people need the app and should check the selected mode’s timing. Browser-based options can also work, but confirm controls and readability on both devices before committing.

Are these online games free for both players?

Lichess is free, and Plato describes Sea Battle as free with optional cosmetic purchases. The two listed Board Game Arena card games require a Premium host to create their table. Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes needs a purchased copy for each remote player who wants the Defuser role.

Can we play together without being online at the same time?

Choose a mode that explicitly allows enough time between turns. Jaipur’s page recommends turn-based play as well as real-time play, but check the actual timer. The voice-led Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes needs simultaneous participation.
