## Worth keeping in mind

- Choose a shared mood and unwanted themes before choosing a film.
- Use official synopses, fuller content advice and current local viewing details.
- Keep stopping, changing the plan and conversation optional.

> You have put on pyjamas and found the good biscuits. Your partner suggests a sweeping tragedy. You meant a pleasant evening, preferably without sobbing into a custard cream.

Romantic movies for couples can mean quite different things: witty company, a grand love story, or something complicated to think about afterwards. Start with the evening you each want. These five picks offer different starting points, with official story sources and content information. They are editorial choices, not a ranking of films every couple should enjoy.

## Give the evening a shape before giving it a title

Each complete two sentences: “Tonight I would enjoy…” and “I would rather avoid…” Be specific enough to help: playful adventure, a quieter romance, or no stories about separation. Neither person needs to explain a private experience to make an unwanted theme count.

In the biscuit example, one person wants emotional depth and the other wants relief from a tiring day. Try: “Could we choose something lighter tonight and save the intense film for an evening we both want it?” That second evening is an invitation, not a debt. A film outside the romance genre can also be the right shared choice.

Check the exact version, running time, legal access, cost, captions and audio description on the service you will use. The BBFC links give selective UK content advice, sometimes with spoilers; use your local classification too. Our notes are not exhaustive. No streaming subscription or availability is promised.

## Pride & Prejudice: for a period romance about first impressions

Joe Wright’s 2005 adaptation follows Elizabeth Bennet’s changing view of Mr Darcy as their lives become entangled. Choose it when you want a literary romance built around misunderstanding, rather than a contemporary dating comedy. The official Focus Features synopsis identifies the story; our mood suggestion is editorial.

The BBFC notes very mild innuendo and language, naked statues and a brief verbal reference to a possible death in a duel. Read its fuller advice if any of that matters tonight. You could ask afterwards, “Which first impression changed for you?” Keep the answer about the film; nobody needs to revisit their own early relationship.

## The Princess Bride: for romance with a comic adventure

This 1987 fairy tale combines a princess, an evil prince, swordplay and giants, framed as a grandfather reading a story. It offers a different starting point when one person wants romance and the other wants something playful with an adventure. Agree whether that combination sounds appealing before making it the compromise.

Its comic setting still includes content to check. The BBFC describes fantasy violence, electrocution, a rat-like creature biting an arm with blood, and mild language. Skip it if those elements are unwanted. You can simply enjoy the tale; there is no need to turn a fictional rescue into a model for your own relationship.

## Enough Said: for dating with an existing life attached

Searchlight describes a divorced single parent, Eva, beginning a relationship with Albert while both face their children leaving home. Eva also befriends a woman whose criticism of her former husband starts influencing how Eva sees her new relationship. This comedy is an option for viewers interested in romance alongside family changes and other people’s opinions.

Choose another pick if separation, an empty nest or judging a new partner would feel too close tonight. The studio synopsis establishes those themes, not a complete content assessment; check local content information before watching. If you want a conversation afterwards, try: “Where did someone else’s opinion start replacing what a character noticed for themselves?” You can leave it there.

## Rye Lane: for a new connection after disappointment

Rye Lane follows two young people sharing their disappointments in love over a day. That gives you a contemporary British romantic-comedy option if you want a story about meeting someone new, rather than a period setting or a long-established relationship. Choose it for that premise, without expecting the film to decide how you should handle your own past.

The BBFC flags very strong language, sexual references, brief established sexual activity and non-sexualised comic nudity, alongside mild violence and rude humour. Check the detail rather than assuming a comedy will be entirely gentle. A possible question afterwards is, “What made a conversation feel easier?” Different answers can remain different.

## Portrait of a Lady on Fire: for a more intense period drama

In this French drama, a young woman is commissioned to paint a woman who is about to enter an arranged marriage. The BBFC’s synopsis and advice describe the commission and a sexual relationship between two women. Consider it when both want a more intense romance, with time to sit with the story afterwards.

This is not the automatic choice for the biscuit-and-light-comedy evening. BBFC advice includes sexualised nudity, a distressing abortion procedure and references to suicide. Read the full notes if those themes affect your choice. Check language and accessibility options on your version. Nobody needs to disclose their sexuality, reproductive history or a painful experience because you watched a film together.

## Let the final choice belong to both of you

Shortlist only films that fit both people’s stated preferences, then agree who chooses this time. Next time, swap the final choice within another mutually welcome shortlist. Keep permission to pause, stop or change the plan; neither a rental fee nor Valentine’s Day creates an obligation to finish.

For a month of movie nights, pencil in the occasions you actually want rather than assigning a film every day. Leave gaps and revisit the mood before each one. Five thoughtful starting points can be more useful than a calendar that somebody has to manage.

Agree whether comments during the film are welcome, and share snacks and clearing up. Afterwards, offer one question or make tea. Watching is entertainment, not a relationship exercise with a promised outcome. The biscuits can be excellent even when your first film choice is not.

Quick answers

## Frequently asked questions

What romantic movie should we watch if we have different tastes?

Start with a shared mood and anything each person wants to avoid. These picks include period romance, comic adventure and contemporary dating stories. Choose from options both freely want; another genre is a valid answer.

Which of these movies could work for Valentine’s Day?

Any could fit if both people welcome its story and content. For a playful adventure, consider The Princess Bride; for period romance, consider Pride & Prejudice. The occasion does not make an unwanted film compulsory.

Where can we watch these romantic movies?

Check licensed services, rentals, cinemas or libraries in your country, including cost and accessibility options. Availability changes. Film inclusion here does not promise access through any particular subscription.
