## Worth keeping in mind

- Choose between an invitation, availability view and editable shared plan.
- Check external-calendar limits and who can see or change each event.
- Try a changed event on both devices before relying on the setup.

> You kept Thursday free for dinner. Your partner kept it free until a dentist appointment appeared. Now there is a cold pan, two phones and a surprisingly heated discussion about the meaning of “shared”.

Shared calendar apps for couples can hold an agreed plan, show availability or bring different schedules into view. Those are different jobs. Choose the one you need, then check what your partner can actually see and change. A colourful square cannot tell you whether someone has agreed to dinner.

## Choose the job before the app

Start with the missed moment. Did someone never receive an invitation, save the event in a personal calendar, or assume that a blank evening meant yes? Software may help with the first two. The third needs a conversation.

An invitation suits one occasion. An availability view helps you suggest a time without reading private appointments. An editable shared calendar holds plans you both maintain. You may need only one of these, rather than another account containing your entire lives.

The options below use official documentation checked on 15 October 2026\. This is a comparison of documented arrangements, not hands-on testing or a security assessment. Check current features, price, renewal terms, accessibility and export options before subscribing.

## Google Calendar or Cupla: what needs to come together?

Consider Google Calendar when you want a separate calendar for agreed plans and explicit control over another person’s access. Google documents different viewing and editing permissions, invitation acceptance and the option to stop sharing. Work or school accounts may have administrator restrictions.

Cupla may suit a couple wanting selected existing schedules in one partner view. Its help describes choosing calendars and letting your partner see event details or a busy block. That can answer “when could we suggest something?” without making every appointment a shared event.

The important trade-off is the route events take. Cupla documents read-only iPhone subscriptions, an Android option that creates a calendar on that phone only, and a Google subscription feed that can take hours to update. Do not assume every route writes changes back everywhere.

For two people who mainly need to agree Thursday dinner, start by testing a separate shared calendar. If your problem is seeing availability across existing accounts, compare Cupla’s connection method for your actual devices. Neither choice turns free time into an obligation.

## Cupla or TimeTree: two schedules or a shared group?

TimeTree documents creating shared calendars and joining one through an invitation. It is worth considering when a plan belongs to a particular group, such as your household or a few people arranging a trip. Check the member list before adding details.

Its external-calendar behaviour matters. Displaying an outside calendar in your own TimeTree view does not share those events with other members. Importing events into a shared calendar does share them, but later changes are not automatic. Reimporting changed details can produce duplicates.

Choose according to the work you want to maintain. A partner-availability view and a group calendar are different arrangements. If your work meeting moves frequently, test the exact import or connection path rather than relying on a product page that says “sync”. Keep work information subject to your organisation’s rules.

## TimeTree or Cozi: membership or a family account?

Cozi brings a family calendar, lists and recipes into one organiser. Its setup guide describes individual family profiles using a shared family-account password. Its calendar can be filtered by person or viewed together. A person’s colour is an organising aid, not evidence that their appointments are private from other account users.

TimeTree’s invitation-based calendar membership may be a clearer fit when different groups need separate plans. Cozi may appeal when the same household wants schedules and lists together. Before choosing, ask who should have access, whether the account arrangement is acceptable, and how someone would leave.

For either option, inspect the current plan rather than assuming all reminders or views are free. Cozi distinguishes appointment reminders from notifications about changes, with some features on paid plans. An event being visible and an alert arriving are separate things to check.

## Try three entries before moving the whole week

Use this original trial together, with harmless sample information. It is a check of your setup, not a test of either partner.

- Add one agreed appointment. Both people open it on their own devices and identify the calendar, time and place.
- Use a harmless sample entry to check which details the other person sees. If the app cannot provide the privacy you need, keep those appointments separate or choose another setup.
- Propose a date in conversation. Once accepted, record it, change its time together and verify the new version on both phones. Check the intended notification separately.

## Keep the agreement bigger than the calendar

Decide who updates a plan and how you will confirm a change that affects someone waiting, travelling or collecting a child. A direct message may still be necessary. Do not use an imported feed as the only way to announce an urgent change.

Either person can want privacy, rest or a different planning method. Agree what belongs in the shared view and revisit it when circumstances change. If one partner is still entering every event and chasing every response, review ownership before adding more alerts.

Thursday dinner needs a time you both understand and want. The useful calendar is the one that carries that agreement while you get on with cooking.

Quick answers

## Frequently asked questions

Which shared calendar app is best for couples?

Match the job: Google Calendar for controlled shared plans, Cupla for selected partner schedules, TimeTree for shared groups or Cozi for household organisation. Check the documented limits and try your actual workflow before choosing.

Does seeing my calendar in TimeTree share it with my partner?

Not necessarily. TimeTree distinguishes personal external-calendar display from importing events into a shared calendar. The imported version is shared but does not automatically follow later changes.

Should couples share all their calendars?

Only share what you both freely want to share. A separate calendar for agreed plans or an availability view may be enough. Review membership, editing rights and how to stop sharing.
